Invicta, Gooseberry

This vigorous, easily grown, high yielding variety is justifiably the most widely planted gooseberry variety.

The berries are large, oval, smooth skinned and ripen to a pale yellow colour. Flavour when both green and fully ripe is excellent. The growth is very vigorous, spreading and thorny; the variety rapidly reaches its full potential as a bush and can be successfully grown on wires.

Invicta has a yield potential double that of Careless and has some resistance to American gooseberry mildew but is vulnerable to Phytophtoria infection.

Invicta is unavailable this season due to propagation failure in the 2022 growing season.
Ordering Information
How To Grow – Plant from late autumn through to early spring in a sunny position that is sheltered from cold winds. Use a rich, moisture retentive soil that is incorporated with plenty of well-rotted manure and free of weeds. Plant in rows 1.5m (5’) apart with a depth of 5cm (2”) – planting currants slightly deeper will encourage the production of extra stems. At the time of despatch, bushes will be dormant and often look dead, but this is completely normal. Prepare holes in the soil wide enough and deep enough to lay out the roots. Please plant as soon as possible upon arrival and water well, apply a mulch to protect the rots from cold temperatures and the bushes will begin to establish. If conditions prevent immediate planting, heel the plant in.

More Information – Bare root bushes are available from November to March. Potted bushes are available from our nursery all year round. The prices listed are for quantities per thousand, if you wish to place a smaller order please get in contact with a member of the team.
