Ebony, Blackcurrant

This new, superbly flavoured, selection sets a new standard for blackcurrants and firmly establishes Ebony as a genuine dessert variety.

A very early ripening variety which crops during the first week of July (14 days ahead of Ben Connan) and produces large, firm fruit with a delicate flavour. Ebony is an outstanding dessert variety with very sweet berries (up to 15% Brix).

The bush is moderately vigorous with an open, slightly spreading, habit. This variety can be successfully grown as a cordon and on wires. Ebony is resistant to Powdery Mildew but slightly susceptible to other fungal diseases.

Particular care needs to be taken to protect the plant from Gall Mite.

Ordering Information
How To Grow – Plant from late autumn through to early spring in a sunny position that is sheltered from cold winds. Use a rich, moisture retentive soil that is incorporated with plenty of well-rotted manure and free of weeds. Plant in rows 1.5m (5’) apart with a depth of 5cm (2”) – planting currants slightly deeper will encourage the production of extra stems. At the time of despatch, bushes will be dormant and often look dead, but this is completely normal. Prepare holes in the soil wide enough and deep enough to lay out the roots. Please plant as soon as possible upon arrival and water well, apply a mulch to protect the rots from cold temperatures and the bushes will begin to establish. If conditions prevent immediate planting, heel the plant in.
