Released by Fresh Forward in Holland. Sonata is an Elsanta – Polka cross that has rapidly become the second most widely planted June bearer in the UK.
Sonata produces a very high Class 1 grade out of attractive, uniform, conical berries that are bright and glossy with superior flavour and texture compared to Elsanta. The variety is not susceptible to splitting but is not quite as firm as Elsanta and is more sensitive to bruising and ripens quickly in hot weather.
Overall yield is less than Elsanta but Sonata’s Class 1 yield is superior. The variety crops five days later than Elsanta under tunnels and two days later in the open. Sonata has good resistance to Powdery Mildew but is susceptible to Verticillium Wilt, Rhizoctonia and Crown Rot, the latter needing careful management.
Our own grown bench graded plants. Carefully selected to ensure that all plants reach a minimum of 14mm crown diameter. No large plants removed from this grade.
